There are so many things I miss about working.
From the obvious: no paycheck, to the sublime: TGIF.
I suppose it's cliche to say I miss the people.
However, I must admit MS has had a way of making me enjoy my solitude.
I've been able to do ALOT of reading. But I miss the book recommendations from other people. Many patients who came in for their eye exam and visit to the optical department were well prepared for the time they'd spend waiting in the waiting room. Book in hand, these people even seemed to enjoy this quiet time and this opportunity to read. Often times I would inquire about what they were reading, and I got some great recommendations! I'd make note of the author and title, and when I got home I added it to my Barnes And Noble or GoodReads wish list. Was it some kind of divine foreshadowing?
Right now I'm enjoying "Maissie Dobbs" by Jacqueline Winspear.
Historical fiction is combined with mystery!
When Maissie's mother dies, she and her father must make a new life. Maissie is a maid turned scholar turned detective. Through the kindness of the Lady who oversees the estate that employs Maissie, her life takes an unpredicted turn. Maissie is given an education and a mentor, and she is able to change the destiny of an otherwise poor child.
I don't actually remember who recommended this series to me, but I'm loving it and I recommend it to you.
Perfect timing or coincidence?
I'm also a huge fan of "Downton Abbey". This is a magnificent story that highlights the lives of the Lord and Lady of a huge estate and the servants who care for them and their home. It takes place in England in the early 1900's. Politics and hidden messages aside, I'm loving the costumes and the portrayal of society/class. World War I rages in the background, and although there is not a true history lesson told here, it does paint a picture of how every life was affected by the war regardless of what their class in society is.
Maissie Dobbs's story takes place at the same time period.
As I read I am able to picture it in my mind as brought alive by "Downton Abbey"! For me, this is simply a fantastic coincidence of 2 pieces of literature enriching my days.
Appreciating my time to read, here in my comfy chair in my peaceful home.
